Mrs. Chandrakala, the beloved Head Mistress of PSG Primary School, Peelamedu, showed absolute kindness and deep involvement in highlighting the difficulties of children with learning disabilities. Her invaluable support was instrumental in the validation and standardisation of this application.
”There are two primary conditions affecting both school-going and non-school-going children today. The most prevalent issue within the “slow learner” and “learning disability” categories is Dyslexia, which affects approximately 10% of school-going children. Currently, there is a lack of specific screening tests to identify these children — a tool capable of doing so would be of significant benefit to society.
Identifying these children allows schools to introduce Remedial Teaching classes. Materials for these classes have already been developed with DST funding, offering the potential to dramatically improve the lives of affected students. This understanding helps parents and teachers provide better care, consideration and comfort.
The second condition, Autism, affects roughly 1% of the child population. While more widely recognised, it exists as a spectrum of disorders with mild, moderate and severe traits. A prominent challenge within Autism Spectrum Disorders is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), which often hinders a child’s right to early childhood education.
A significant problem is the massive number of children up to Grade 5 and the lack of staff trained to identify these conditions. Consequently, school dropout rates remain high. Early identification of dyslexic and autistic children, combined with remedial teaching in the child’s mother tongue, is essential to help them realise their full potential.
A digital screening method has been developed to identify these children through a single, engaging mobile application utilising three specific assessment modules. Once identified, children transition to remedial teaching programmes. This software is available through PSG College of Technology and Vishnugranthi, with development support from the DST.
For autism, current identification methods include M-CHAT and ABC assessments. D-early builds upon this foundation, making scientifically proven screening accessible and efficient for schools, parents and educators across Tamil Nadu.
